Having a positive influence from a mentor can go a long way in sharing in success learned from wisdom and life experience of another. I have been fortunate to be the youngest of 8 children and have been able to benefit from many mentors. The eldest of our family, my brother Mike, has had much success in his working career. Just a few years older than me (I jest), he has recently summarized his experience in buying and selling a few businesses over his career. Living as a happy retiree, his lessons are summarized in this team talk and suggests how he “won the race” of his life.

5 Thoughts in Formulating Your Perfect Retirement

By: Steve Economopoulos, CFP®, ChFC, CMT

My family vacation to Myrtle Beach, S.C. in July 2019 was a chance for me to kick back, relax and spend time with those closest to me.  I had time to think.  Observing many passer-byers, shoppers, tourists, and people in general, I let my mind wander to those that were enjoying what may have been a perfect retirement day in their own eyes.   At that moment, with my wife and I collecting all sorts of shells from the beach, it hit me. What really is the “perfect retirement”?  What does it take?  And what should you bethinking about to formulate your own days on the sand?

"Stormy Weather for Stocks?"

By: Jurrien Timmer-Fidelity Viewpoints

September 4, 2019

Key takeaways

  • While second-quarter earnings came in above expectations, the third quarter may well turn negative.

  • Against the backdrop of possibly ongoing valuation pressure (per the Brexit roadmap), I see little upside for stocks until we get past October's seasonal trough.

  • The silver lining is that equity valuations relative to bonds (the equity risk premium) are back to levels seen at the Q4 2018 low, when the S&P 500® index was down 20%.

  • Over the long run, a well-diversified mix of stocks, bonds, and cash should continue to serve investors well.

Key points

  • Equity markets have stabilized and remain within their broad range established over the past six months, but risks remain.

  • Manufacturing sentiment and activity continue to be weak, but that malaise has not yet bled into the larger consumer segment of the economy.

  • Not all trade news is gloomy, and certain international regions, like Japan, may provide some much-needed diversification in the current environment.

One of the major developments in the Financial Services Industry in the past few years is the regulation and law surrounding how investors are to be educated about the differences in working with a Broker versus an Advisor versus a Planner. It can be very confusing but can be the most important aspect in developing the trust necessary for a positive experience for the investor. With a new law recently passed (June 5, 2019) by the SEC, here are 5 items to consider as an investor and questions to ask your financial professional...

"Are Bonds Signaling Recession?"

By: Fidelity Viewpoints

August 15, 2019

Key takeaways

  • "Yields on longer-term US Treasury securities have fallen below those on short-term Treasurys.

  • This unusual relationship between yields may indicate that investors are concerned a recession is approaching.

  • Investors should maintain an appropriate asset allocation and not make abrupt decisions due to concerns about an eventual economic slowdown."
