I watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off many times growing up. His character probably isn’t what most parents want their children to emulate, but he did offer some profound wisdom when he said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Family, work, and social life fills up our calendars and it is easy to understand what Ferris is talking about. You can’t sprint forever so it is important to take a day off now and then. If you aren’t able to take a long vacation, make sure you set aside some time for yourself to recharge. You don’t need to be as extreme as Ferris and be absent nine times in his last semester, but you should take some time to enjoy the one life you have to live.
Real life isn’t Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. If you skip work or ignore responsibilities completely, you will probably suffer some consequences. Finding a healthy balance is critical so you can be the best version of yourself at home, work, and in the community. This week I’m spending time at the beach with my family. I won’t be lip synching “Twist and Shout” on a parade float, borrowing a 1961 Ferrari, or catching a Cubs game at Wrigley, but I will be taking advantage of a day off! Hopefully you will be able to do the same this summer!
